Tucked into the back of Uluwatu in a peaceful locale near the Batu Jaran viewpoint, Satria Bungalows offer two styles of rooms surrounding a swimming pool and leafy garden.

Choose from double-storey redbrick and thatch bungalows with separate rooms up and down or more traditional stone and thatch cottages. We were only able to view the brick bungalow as the cute stone ones were fully booked, but the friendly staff said they are “just the same” although we doubt this a little. We viewed an upstairs room, which given the choice is the better option in the double-storey bungalows as it offers a high thatch ceiling which not only adds to the sense of space in the room but looks and smells lovely.

Cute and bright interiors.

Air-con interiors are good-sized but a tad dark with the red exposed brick continuing to the interior walls and black polished cement floors, but with the wooden doors open to the balcony / terrace they are bright enough. Solid matching wooden furnishings count a bed with bedside chests of draws, a dresser/desk and a wardrobe. Bedside lamps and patchwork quilts add colour to the dark earthy tones of the room. Ensuite bathrooms are outdoor-style and provide hot-water showers, but the thatch roof only covers the room partially and it was looking rather mouldy—the toilet seat could really do with replacing, nevertheless it was otherwise clean and functional.

Furnished balconies and terraces enjoy a garden and pool outlook, a perfect spot to relax—grab a book, put your feet up, your holiday starts here. The small shady freeform swimming pool is rather inviting, but be quick to nab one of the sun lounges—we only saw two. The pool takes up much of the garden with narrow paths alongside—be careful or you may end up having a swim unwittingly.

Breakfast is not included on the rates we were quoted, but is on some booking sites, so possibly is available for a small charge, but popular Ulu Resto and Lands End Cafe are both at the top of the street and open at 08:00. Staff at Satria Bungalow are very friendly and helpful and mentioned that rates are negotiable for a longer stay. We like the charming traditional elements here and along with the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere make Satria Bungalow a decent flashpacker pick.

If you would prefer a sea view, Sandat Mas Cottages offer a range of very basic, but clean rooms, some with ocean glimpses and pricier ones with the full monty, while at Ropik and Alik Homestay you can lie in bed and see the sea in the distance from the upper floor, but rooms are a bit tired and it’s sans pool.
