Agung Bungalows provide some of the cheapest rooms in Candi Dasa, and the cheapest absolute seafront rooms -- and you'd be hard pressed to actually see the bungalows when you walk in — as they say — for the trees.
You enter this exceptionally welcoming family-run budget homestay through a narrow corridor of gnarled branches and orchids — and more orchids — that leads directly to the seafront. The all-but-hidden brick bungalows have varied exterior styling, added to over the years as the family business grew. Ornate stonework around the doorways and windows; kitsch fake-log cement finish; ornate carved wooden doors; or simple bamboo and brick are among your choices. We do feel that the garden is somewhat more loved and cared for than the bungalows. Rooms are old and tired, a bit worn, a bit stained — but some have a sea view. The interior walls and ceiling are entirely woven bamboo. Large tinted windows could do with a clean, and rooms are a little dark — like the middle of most jungles. A wooden bed has an okay mattress that’s a tad thin, but from the front rooms you can lay in bed and look at the sea. Bamboo furniture includes a large open shelving unit and bedside tables. Rooms have ceiling fans, and the room we viewed had some dodgy looking electricals — the light switch was attached to the bamboo wall with what looks like big staples — probably “safe”, but be careful. A stone wall and tile hot-water bathroom is wet style with the shower in the middle of the room, with a narrow bench to keep your clothes dry. Tiles are worn and stained, but otherwise clean. A small veranda is furnished with a couple of mismatched wooden chairs. Note that the owners keep a few small dogs, and they are friendly, but it may be a concern if you’re not dog lover.
The beachfront area has a wide front path, pebbled in a floral design, with a couple of worn wooden sun-lounges. A patch of sand, shady palm trees and a bar with chairs facing out to sea make it an ideal setting for a Bintang while watching the local fishermen.
Agung Bungalows is a good budget option if you don't mind a room that’s seen better days. Included breakfast and free WiFi -- and absolute beachfront -- make it excellent value. For a more spruced up budget option sans sea view, try the cheaper rooms at Seaside Cottages
