Nirwana Resort and Spa

Edging the Padang Bai side of Candi Dasa, accessed through an adventurous local road, Nirwana Resort and Spa is an intimate and quiet, upscale resort by the sea. Once you make it, the lobby opens to an impressive entrance, with a wooden deck surrounded by lotus ponds and fountains leading to the ocean.

Photo of Nirwana Resort and Spa An expansive tree-filled landscaped garden with grid-like black lava stone paths leads to the Balinese-style air-con bungalows.

Good-sized concrete and glass, thatch-roofed bungalows are painted in a dusky neutral green that blends into the surrounding foliage. Interior styling has dark tropical neutrals. Expect traditional colours and textures, including a high thatched ceiling with exposed beams, dark painted walls and black floor paving. Large beds with quality linen are mosquito netted and feature a simple wood panelled bedhead. Dark wooden furniture, wooden blinds and lampshade made from large seashells add to the luxe ambience. Rooms are kitted out with all the mod-cons you would expect. Contemporary styled bathrooms are smart and sophisticated with black and grey mosaic ties. Deluxe bathrooms feature large picture windows with views out to sea — they can be closed for privacy.

Glass sliding doors open to wide verandas furnished with wooden planters’ chairs and a side table. The more expensive bungalows have pool and sea views but are more public while bungalows with garden views are more private. We love the views out to sea, so if you don't mind compromising on some privacy we recommend the sea-view bungalows — it’s a small resort, so won’t be overrun with other guests.

There's no beach to speak of, but a great seafront swimming pool area makes up for that. The lava-stone-rimmed infinity pool is shaded by palm trees. It’s large and deep — maybe too deep for small kids to touch the bottom. Huge rattan daybeds with big comfy cushions face the sea and sun-lounges with umbrellas add extra lounging options.

The resort’s facilities include a restaurant and spa. Breakfast and daily afternoon tea is included and free WiFi throughout. Very friendly staff seemed genuinely happy to have guests when we visited.

While it’s a little far from anywhere — you’ll need transport into Candi Dasa — Nirwana Resort and Spa is a good higher-end option for a bit of a getaway. It doesn't feel super formal five star, but friendly and personal due to the small size and it’s a quiet location.
