In the middle of Candi Dasa’s main drag, hidden behind a high lava-stone wall with no signage except for a couple of colourful umbul umbul (Balinese flags), a traditional multi-coloured and ornately carved Balinese door opens to Relax Beach Resort.

Candi Dasa - Relax Beach Resort

A promising beginning.

Rows of neat and colourful art-filled bungalows edge either side of a path that leads to an excellent ocean-side pool area and the sea.

Hmmm, not bad at all.

The air-con bungalows vary in size, style and price — they get more expensive the closer you get to the ocean. All are large, light and breezy with big open windows and comfortable outdoor living areas.

Tradition, meet modern.

Some feature checkerboard cement-tiled floors, others are more plain, some have colourful patinated wooden window and door frames, others carved shutters. Interior walls are painted white and feature large and colourful contemporary canvases. The art dominates the rooms — staff suggest if you don’t like the paintings, move rooms!

If you don’t like the art in your room, change rooms!

Colourful furniture is built from recycled fishing boats. Large shell wind-chimes tinkle in some rooms. Modern wooden beds sport good spring mattress, mosquito nets and dusky-neutral coloured linens. Spotless tiled and pebbled hot-water bathrooms have rain-showers stone washbasins and distressed-wood vanities — smart and modern. Outdoor living areas with built-in lounges covered in piles of brightly coloured cushions and a small table, make a comfortable breezy spot for reading, eating the included breakfast or taking advantage of the free WiFi.

Personally we would have skipped the fishing trip and hung out here.

A blue kidney-shaped oceanfront swimming pool continues the vivid colour theme with colourful ball-shaped lanterns hanging from trees and bright cushioned sun-lounges — some shaded and others for the sun-worshippers.

This is great choice for flashpackers who are after a bit of a seaside splurge. As the name says, Relax Beach Resort is very — relaxing. The colourful art may not be to everybody’s taste, but we love the fun, vibrant atmosphere and it’s one of our favourites along this strip. Recommended.
