Located on one of the most picturesque spots in Candi Dasa, considered spiritually auspicious in Bali — between the sea and the lagoon, in front of hillside Pura Candi Dasa — Gedong Gandhi Ashram is not a hotel, but they do provide accommodation open to the general public, and it’s a great deal — with some conditions.

Firstly, this is a religious community which means no smoking, alcohol, unwed couples or skimpy clothes. Along with your simple room, three vegetarian or fish communal meals and a daily yoga class are included in the price — 350,000 rupiah for one person, with an additional 100,000 rupiah per person sharing the same bungalow, or 50,000 rupiah for kids. As a paying guest you are not expected to participate in any of the Pujas — chanting or fire ceremonies — which happen four times a day, but are free to do so if you wish. By staying at the ashram, you are helping the community run locally based health and education services, namely a kindergarten and by-donation acupuncture clinic. They also offer a reduced rate if you wish to volunteer skills and be more involved.

Gedong Gandhi Ashram has seven simple bungalows, some family-sized, spread around a large grassy area shaded by swaying coconut trees. Some bungalows are closer to the lagoon, others closer to the main building, all with fantastic sea views. The brick and thatch bungalows are designed with an unusual gabled thatch roof with a loft and large veranda with an assortment of tables, chairs, lounges and hammocks — perfect for post-yoga chilling. The rooms are simple, but not as austere or cell-like as you might imagine in a religious institution. Large tiled rooms provide wooden beds, with mosquito nets and a small standard fan. They are light and bright, mostly with glassless windows — some have wooden shutters or bars. Attached bathrooms are basic with only cold-water showers. You’ll have to bring your own sundries like soap and toilet paper.

The included yoga is practised in a large outdoor pavilion by the sea. At the moment they have one local and one Australian teacher, but this may change. If you’re not staying at the ashram, you can join a class for 50,000 rupiah. There’s also a meditation room and library. Several times a year the ashram runs intensive yoga retreats, and the bungalows may not be available on a casual basis at those times, however you can sign up for a retreat.

Gedong Gandhi Ashram offers a different experience from a regular hotel, in a very relaxing and welcoming environment. If you’ve never done yoga and would like to try, this may be less threatening than some of the more expensive and popular places. It’s also a good all-inclusive budget option if you just want to hang out and meet a few locals.
