Secluded at the end of a remote track, Pondok Pisang incorporates six huge and delightful boho hippy beach huts. Windswept and faded sea-and-salt-worn colours and textures abound in this utterly charming and idiosyncratic hotel.

Candi Dasa - Pondok Pisang

That looks like an all-day kind of nook to us.

Two large double-storey traditional-style wooden houses sit either side of a wide wooden beach sun-deck, each with two double beds and private beach access. Other buildings sprawl around the tree-filled gardens, each with various room combinations, some accommodating up to eight.

The paint-peeling, art-filled houses may seem a little chaotic and are far from five-star luxury, but they are whimsical and hugely atmospheric.

Rooms are fan-cooled, filtered by sea breezes. Tiled floors, and a variety of wood, bamboo and brick walls, mismatched wooden furniture, batik textiles, pattered rugs and comfy beds with mosquito nets come together to create a relaxed organic-style bohemian haven. Bathrooms have hot water, and each has its own style, several with hand-made mosaic bath tubs.

A real little hideaway.

Decorated in the same patchwork of mismatched and muted-colour styles, a separate double-storey building houses a downstairs open-air restaurant and upstairs, a yoga studio.

When they say ocean front, they mean ocean front.

Yet another large building has a smaller restaurant — with a delightful antique rocking horse. The vegetarian menu is unpretentious, with mostly simple Indonesian fare. Yoga isn’t available on an individual basis, but group classes can be arranged for five or more people.

A faded-blue wooden beach deck makes up for the lack of actual beach. Strips of fabric wave flag-like in the wind. A sun-shaded area provides lounges and sheltered and cushioned daybeds are dotted about the garden. The private beach is excellent for swimming and snorkelling — you’ll need to bring your own equipment.

Looks like a lot of love went into this bath.

We love the laid-back casual ambience of this very relaxing hideaway. If you want to connect with your inner hippy, or just hang out in a peaceful seaside spot for a while, Pondok Pisang will fit the bill. As some of the rooms are large, it’s a great spot for a group of friends or a family. Room rates are for two people, with 150,000 rupiah per person is charged for additional guests. Breakfast is included and WiFi is available.

To find Pondok Pisang, from Jalan Raya Candi Dasa, turn into Jalan Mandira near the large Kantor Perbekal Sengkidu building. There’s a large signpost here with several hotels marked. Continue along Jalan Mandira for one kilometre. Look for the Pondok Pisang sign on the left and follow the dirt road for about 300 metres.

For a less expensive and less remote option, Ida’s Homestay in the middle of Candi Dasa has five traditional houses in a seaside garden.
