Chilled, clean and friendly
Just a short stroll to some pumping waves, Berawa Beach Surf Stay is a mellow and friendly homestay, perfect for post surf chilling.
A mix of comfortable three-bed “shared rooms” (we’d call them dorms), twins and doubles, two appealing swimming pools plus a terrific communal lounge and rooftop deck entice you to kick back and let the worries of the world disappear like an ebb tide. Run by a friendly French guy who’s alter ego is a surf instructor, and his Indonesian wife, you’ll be made to feel right at home, and needless to say if you are keen to learn to surf, here’s the man.
The surf stay takes up a double-storey L-shaped block around the courtyard pool. Look for the big “99 BB” on the garage-style double entry doors. Locally Berawa Beach Surf Stay is known as “BB99” or just “BB”. We were only able to view one of the shared rooms, as they were full, but the roomy light-filled, tiled, air-con-cooled white space beats any crowded dorm we’ve seen. Two single whitewashed wooden beds on the lower level, and another on a mezzanine above the hot-water ensuite bathroom, sport crisp white sheets with contrasting runners and pillows. Drawers and shelving add storage, and stair banisters make a handy towel or swimwear rack. Word is the twin and double rooms follow the same light, bright, clean and comfortable styling.
Unfortunately the bathroom was occupied, so no intel on the cleanliness, however judging by the scrubbed place in general it’s a good bet it’s spic and span. The upper level harbours a comfortable and spacious homely lounge / TV room with folding glass doors opening to the second deep blue swimming pool jutting over the surrounding Canggu greenery.
Two shared kitchens, one upstairs and one down are open to guests—help yourself to water, coffee or tea anytime, or BYO egg for a fry-up as breakfast isn’t included.
At sunset, climb to the rooftop observation deck to savour a bevvy or two as the sun descends over the paddy: life couldn’t be better.
Berawa Beach Surf Stay is popular, and mainly draws folk there to surf, so tides and swell is the general cit-chat round the pool. You’ll need to book (we don’t think they’re on any booking sites), and pay in cash. We think the shared rooms are a solid deal for single surfers, and if your budget stretches to your own room, flashpackers will be happy too. If you like the idea of a homely homestay, but surfing is not really your thing, Puri Ayu Bali are a little pricier, but offers a comfortable welcoming stay.

Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
