Relaxing, friendly and clean
Surf all day, but want a relaxing comfortable and clean base? Mote Surfstay offer a range of smart and neat rooms surrounding a grassy garden and sparkling swimming pool plus a terrific communal chill space perfect for meeting other travellers.
Tiled rooms are clean and fuss-free, spacious with super comfy beds available with basic amenities in the standard rooms, and adding TV, DVD player, fridge and kitchenette in the superior rooms. Both offer air-con or ceiling fan-cooled options (50,000 rupiah more if you’d prefer air-con). Ensuite bathrooms are semi-outdoor style, clean but a little grimy in the corners (hard to avoid outside in the tropics) and smelt fresh. Shared terraces offer a spot to sit, but nowhere to rest your drink.
The central swimming pool is large enough for a short lap, yet with little shade and no seating, although the lawn is a decent spot for laying out your towel for a tan. A sign warns that the pool can turn blond hair green, but offers a simple solution (wash with lime), all about the PH apparently.
What gives Mote the edge on other similar homestays about town is the great set up in the shared space. A huge circular lounge is excellent for a movie night (you’ll all just have to agree on the film from the extensive collection), and the kitchenette supplies a microwave, toaster , grill press, and hot/cold drinking water dispenser plus a large share fridge, just the ticket for rustling up a hearty breakfast before you hit the waves as brekkie isn’t included in the rate.
Noticeboards inform you of tide times and info explaining the general surf conditions at all the local beaches. Even though Mote is a “surf stay”, most staff, although extremely friendly and helpful, don’t surf, but can point you in the direction of local surf schools, or if you’re experienced, get the daily lowdown from other travellers in the common room.
The super relaxing and friendly ambience at Mote Surfstay will suit everyone from singles to families, but loud music and excessive noise are not permitted—this is not a late party place. Mote Surfstay is a good half-hour walk to the beach, but staff can help you with scooter hire. For a chilled atmosphere on a lower budget, The Farm Hostel, is pricy for a dorm, but may offer what you’re after, or at the other end of the spectrum, for an all inclusive upmarket surf package, The Chill House is just down the road.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
