If you’re quick, you may be among the first guests at A7 Guesthouse as it hadn’t quite opened the doors when we had a look-see in late February 2017.

Just a stone’s throw from the sand and waves, A7’s seven rooms occupy a double-story block, and we’d give them an A too. A rooftop deck and interior courtyard pool offer more reasons to consider this beaut little guesthouse. Interiors are a decent size, and the style is industrial hipster chic, with white painted exposed brick, raw cement, grey floor tiles, and patinated wood. Collections of gallery-style tiny framed pictures add quirky interest.

Quality mattresses and linen keep it comfy as well as smart, air-con keeps it cool and lighting and power points are considered. Open storage holds bags, bestows a place to hang your coat and adds pops of colour. The small TV is strangely high on the wall, but fine for watching from bed, as at the time of our visit there was no seating in the rooms.

The ground-floor room we viewed looked to a tiny leafy courtyard (well a wall with a few young plants), and the upper floor rooms enjoy a balcony, too narrow for a chair, but as this is Canggu, fine for viewing the nearby building sites (with sea glimpses). Ensuite bathrooms are small and basic, with hot-water rain showers but no bench space, however towel racks are supplied.

The pocket-sized courtyard plunge pool is good for a cooling dip and covered decking sports beanbags and unique wave-shaped rattan lounges for a quiet laze. Climb to the roof for more beanbags and a shady bale with views to the sea, we’d be heading here for sunset.

Fronting the guesthouse, an exterior wooden frame has a very young vine starting to climb, and will look very attractive when the whole canopy is complete. A7’s rates include breakfast, but for the time being served at nearby Grass Terrace Cafe.

You’ll find A7 Guesthouse long the signposted lane just beachside of the imposing Frii Bali Echo Beach Hotel. If you like a hipster look, but your purse strings are too tight for your own room, the dorm at The Project Hostel might be the ticket. Alternatively around the corner, Echoland offers a range of rooms from dorms to privates, and mixes exposed white painted brick with traditional Indonesian style.
