Charming and cosy
For the some of the most charming and cosy budget rooms in Canggu, look no further than Canggu Stay.
It’s pretty much room only—the sole facility is a share kitchen, there’s no garden, no pool, and no frills, but this is far from primitive. For a single traveller on a budget not into the hostel scene this is the best deal in town, although you’ll probably have to hang out at cafe’s and bars to meet others as there are only three rooms here—a single, a double, and a family room with a double bed and a double bunk.
Canggu Stay sits behind Canggu Day Spa on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, with the same owners—handy for a massage. The small single block faces the neighbouring homestay’s expanse of grassy green lawn and rooms open to a semi-enclosed veranda with the kitchen and a lockable gate at one end.
Interiors are smallish, but not tiny and the decor is delightfully fresh with a patchwork of colourful traditional cement tiles and whitewashed furniture. Bright feature walls and colourful bed covers in some rooms add to the style. Ceiling fans in some, and standard fans in others keep the rooms cool and you can open windows for some bug-free fresh air as all are covered with mozzie screens.
The family room adds air-con, but still with a fan and screens. All are furnished with simple storage plus a chair and some add a small desk. Tiny hot-water ensuite bathrooms are clean and colourful—the tiles get even more patterned here. Washbasins provide no bench space, but a metal rack will hold your bits and bobs. Seating on the small terrace offers a spot to watch the grass grow, and the kitchen is equipped with a dining table and chairs as well as a large fridge, stove and drinking water dispenser.
Bikes and motorbikes can be hired nearby, which will cut the half-hour walk to the beach to minutes. We love the style at Canggu Stay and think it’s a comfortable option if you’re going to be out surfing or cafe-hopping all day. Note that Canggu Stay have a minimum booking of two nights and a 50,000 rupiah refundable key deposit is required. If you plan to stay a week or more, they’ll need a copy of your passport and 22,000 rupiah extra for police registration.
For a similar aesthetic, more sociable atmosphere and a truckload more cash, The Chillhouse one kilometre up the road, may be on your radar or some stylish midrange options include Papaya Guesthouse and Roemah Peranakan. A quirky but cosy budget option is Nudle Room behind their cafe on Jalan Raya Canggu where you sleep in a private air-con bamboo hut, but you’ll have to share a bathroom.
