Eight spacious rooms occupy a double-storey block, designed in a way that rooms have no adjoining walls with wide balconies and verandas overlooking the swimming pool, leafy garden and greenery beyond. Hosts are a long-term expat German couple with a team of attentive local staff, and having widely travelled themselves, have considered every little detail in the room, making for a very comfortable stay.

Spick-and-span air-con tiled rooms are light filled and fresh with mosquito-netted whitewashed wooden beds, crisp white linen and patchwork batik bedcovers. There’s plenty of storage, bedside tables, a small desk (although a TV takes up most of the workspace) and lighting, power outlets, switches and remotes are all were you want them.

The roomy spotless bathroom enjoys a hot-water rain shower, and the bespoke polished cement bench and washbasin provided ample storage space (and there’s even extra loo roll). Rattan armchairs and a table turn the balcony into a relaxing outdoor living room, ideal for a wake-up coffee or a wind-down sunset beverage.

Immaculate.

The inviting swimming pool, is large enough for a refreshing splash before retiring to one of the shaded lounges or cushioned bales to unwind. A substantial included breakfast (if it’s not enough, you can ask for more at no additional cost) is served in the poolside open-air kitchen/dining room. The fully equipped kitchen is open to guests with coffee, tea and drinking water available anytime; beers and soft drinks for purchase and a library of books and DVDs to borrow.

Papaya Guesthouse is hidden in a quiet lane off Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong about two kilometres from the beach. Staff can help arrange transport and bike / scooter hire and fill you in on any local info. The guesthouse gets busy in high season when it’s recommend to book in advance.

The deal here is sweetened for single travellers as Papaya Guesthouse offer a discount of 150,000 rupiah for solo travellers. If Papaya is full, consider the stylish rooms at family-run Puri Ayu Bali, although it’s a little off the beaten track, or Sedasa Lodge on Jalan Raya Pantai Berawa offer spacious, simple modern rooms opening to pool and a lovely rooftop bar.
