Tucked away on the quiet side of Canggu a stone throw from Pererenan Beach, luxurious Lautan Kupu Kupu Villa offers grandeur in and intimate boutique hotel setting, a delightful surprise hidden behind a plain wooden gate.
A cavernous L-shaped room with soaring ceilings, houses the lobby and communal living and dinning areas that skirt a 19-metre swimming pool. Copious lounges and seating including and an ornate carved daybed and dining setting for ten barely fill the space, yet it’s comfortable and welcoming. Beyond, a covered wooden corridor dotted with large statement Asian antiques extends to the five long-house style Deluxe Rooms wrapping them on all sides, with two Garden Suites on a lower level.
Spacious rooms are individually decorated, air-con cooled with the option of a ceiling fan, and come equipped with a minibar, and safe. Deluxe rooms enjoy polished hardwood floors and a traditional exposed-beam peaked-style ceiling. Louvred doors open to the covered corridor with views over the neighbouring fields, and from some rooms, to the rolling waves. An extravagantly carved oversized canopied bed floats in the centre of the generous rooms and additional furnishings add seating, a desk and storage. Roomy ensuite bathrooms feature outdoor showers, but remain private.
Between rooms, wide semi-open alcoves house massage tables for private “outdoor” treatments — your personal mini spa! The Garden rooms offer similar facilities, but decorated in a more contemporary style with a pale neutral pallet and look to a narrow courtyard garden.
Breakfast is served poolside, and we’d find it hard to leave — the lengthy turquoise swimming pool, watched over at one end by a giant Buddha head is an absolute delight. Laze in a sun lounge, move to the shady bale, jump back in the pool, order a drink, repeat — long lazy days sorted.
Staff were a bit vague when we dropped by, and only had basic English, however they were very friendly, but to be fair they weren’t expecting us and the English speaking manager was out. Meals can be arranged in-house, or take your pick from a handful of nearby eateries. Although the scale is grand, Lautan Kupu Kupu Villa feels homely and personal, a good-value top end pick. Go for the sea-view room, well worth the extra bucks. Groups or large families can hire the seven rooms together for a discounted rate with options to add twin or extra beds.

Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
