Despite its central location, the ambience is more like a traditional travellers’ guesthouse than a business hotel. Edging a small courtyard, overlooking the temple in the family compound, the double-storey hotel offers eight comfortable ceiling-fan-cooled or air-con doubles and twin rooms.

Unfortunately bathrooms provide cold-water showers only, which is often a deal breaker for us, however they offered to bring a bucket of hot water for a wash. Bright tiled rooms are spacious and clean if a little tired and shabby. Beds are huge and comfortable. Other furnishings include a desk, bedside tables with lamps, wardrobe and comfy armchair and we loved the small balconies kitted out with cosy lounge chairs, a good spot for logging into the free WiFi. Bathrooms are barebones, but very clean and the cold water isn’t really all that cold.

The busy road outside is a little noisy, but the large gates are closed at midnight and rooms are far enough back that it’s not disturbing. Breakfast is not included in the rate, however we were bought a small plate of jajan Bali, traditional Balinese cakes, daily. A full breakfast is available in the small courtyard restaurant for 70,000 rupiah. Other meals and snacks can be prepared too and they have very cold beer in the fridge.

Our kind of grazing.

Nakula Familiar Inn is somewhat pricey compared to some other nearby hotels with a few more facilities, however the local info, maps and genuine hospitality offered by the kind and helpful owners certainly adds a lot of value. If you would like a few more facilities including hot water, TV and a fridge in your room, Hotel Intansari on Jalan Thamrin offers good value, but not the same family atmosphere.
