Comfortable and stylish, at the far end of Toya Bunkah (in Songan village), in a quite hill rising above the lake, Bali Sunrise provides three rooms and three villas — which are essentially larger rooms — and we think this is the best mid range offering in the area.

Only the villas have views — however the rooms overlook a pretty garden, and you don’t feel you’re missing out. Bali Sunrise is laid out like a small village, with stone walled paths, lush tropical garden and ornate craved wooden doorways leading to different areas of the small hotel. Stone statues reside in alcoves and water features tinkle.

Each room and villa is furnished differently, but the styling and ambience are consistent. The stone clad and wood rooms feature a generous veranda-cum-living areas appointed with a traditional canopied wooden daybed, and rattan lounge chairs with an antique-style Indonesian cast iron and glass lamp hanging above. The decor is ‘tropical classic’, with natural finishes.

Sliding glass doors lead to the wooden floored room. A cosy four poster bed and comfortable furnishings make the room feel homey, with large mirrors adding a sense of space. Rugs provide warmth when getting out of bed on a cold morning. Sliding glass and wood doors lead to sandstone and granite bathrooms equipped with modern facilities including a hot-water rain shower.

Villas nest in small private tropical gardens behind carved wooden doors. Their styling and tone has the same rustic charm of the rooms, they're just larger and have great views of the lake and surrounding countryside. As well as a double bed, one double-storey family sized villa provides twin beds, actually, mattresses on a raised platform rather than actual beds, snugly tucked away in an alcove in the attic. Bathrooms in the villas add a tub for a nice hot soak (although in the smaller villa, it’s more of a deep shower recess). There’s no pool as you may expect at this price point, but the hot springs are just down the road.

The attached restaurant overlooking the lake continues the same natural classic style as the rest of the hotel and serves fresh and satisfying Indonesian and Western fare. Breakfast is included (for two guests — so if you’re in the family villa, it’s an addition 50,000 rupiah per person).

Plenty of space to relax in.

Free WiFi is patchy and doesn’t quiet make it to the rooms. The friendly staff can arrange trekking tours and transport and have discounted tickets to the hot springs.

If you’d like to start your sunrise trek well rested, this is the place to stay. In low season you may be lucky with a discounted walk-in rate, but you’ll need to book in high season.
