If you’re on a budget, and would like a private room, you can’t go past the very friendly, family run (and, it must be said, somewhat old and rundown) Hotel Putra Mulya in Kedisan as it is the cheapest sleep in the area. Hotel Putra Mulya is positioned back from the road opposite Lake Batur — turn right as you enter the village of Kedisan.

Comprised of four bungalows, each with two simple rooms, this is one of the quieter locations around as the constant trucks with loads of volcanic sand don’t pass by this road.

Bungalows are set amidst a small pretty garden of frangipani trees and flowers. One in the style of a Balinese house with ornate stone and wood decoration, and gilt shuttered windows and details, while the other three have simple tiled exteriors. Cleanish simple tiled rooms provide a comfortable bed with mismatched frilly pattered bedding. A mix of paint chipped and worn furniture offers somewhere to sit and store you bag.

Four rooms offer hot water (when the sun shines) — it’s solar, and the owner said it doesn’t always work — and the other four rooms have cold-water only bathrooms for the same price, so ask for a hot-water room. Bathrooms are otherwise basic and stained, but clean enough.

From the furnished veranda you may glimpse the lake through the vegetable farms opposite. A small onsite restaurant serves the simple included breakfast. There’s no WiFi here, so you’ll have to rely on 3G, or make it a real holiday and unplug for a day.

Hotel Putra Mulya is popular with backpackers, but if you can afford a little more, head up the hill to Tiing Bali for spectacular views.
