Flashpacker options are a little thin on the ground around Jimbaran, but Kubu d’Bukit’s appeal is as much for its friendly vibe as the simple clean rooms.

Set in a suburban area about one kilometre from the beach, Kubu d’Bukit’s modest rooms are equipped with kitchenettes and occupy a single storey longhouse and a double-storey block sandwiching a small swimming pool. Rooms in the single-storey are older and a tad dark, so angle for the newer building, with the top floor rooms enjoying a bit of a view of Jimbaran’s suburbia.

The rooms are simple but solid value.

The tiled air-con interiors are smallish, but not too much of a squeeze for two and though they won’t win any design awards (think bland and beige), they provide a comfy bed with clean white linen, decent lighting, a flatscreen TV with cable channels and a safe. The kitchenette is equipped with a small gas burner, kettle and a good-sized fridge—handy if you’ve been travelling a while and just hankering to cook for yourself—head to the fish markets to stock up! Ensuite bathrooms are clean with glass-screened hot-water showers.

Shady furnished terraces and balconies overlook the clean but small pool, but if you want to lay in the sun, you’ll have to be quick as there are only a couple of poolside lounges. Breakfast is not included, but can be purchased—though it’s just as easy to boil an egg in your kitchen.

A compact but comfortable affair.

Staff are super friendly and can help with transport and offer local tips—they also mentioned that rates are negotiable for a longer stay. If you prefer somewhere closer to the beach The Celuk located behind Keraton Jimbaran has similar, newer and slightly better rooms also with a kitchenette, but no swimming pool or for slightly older rooms with a pool (some with kitchenette), New Asta Graha is 500 metres to the sea.
