Popular resort with party pool
In the thick of Kuta’s crowded Poppies Lane II, Grand Barong Resort were celebrating their two year anniversary when we dropped in in June 2017, and still looked sparkling new.
A range of smart rooms are on offer in this sprawling popular resort hotel built around a lagoon-style pool with swim-up bar and party atmosphere and quieter decked courtyard pool. A rowdy sports bar fronts the hotel and offers happy hours and the opportunity to watch the passing parade of Kuta, however it’s far enough away from rooms when you’d prefer a bit of peace and quiet.
Rooms range from compact superiors overlooking the quieter pool to spacious deluxe pool access rooms opening to the larger swimming pool, and suites with garden views. Tiled air-con rooms are spotlessly clean and comfortable. The modern styling offers a nod to Balinese culture with black-and-white poleng cloth representing cosmic duality as the main decor feature (although the significance is possibly lost on most guests).
All categories offer flatscreen TVs, in-room safes, minbar, tea-making facilities and private balconies furnished with daybeds. Gleaming modern bathrooms are rather small but graced with hot-water rainfall showers and full amenities, and family suites add a tub.
The lagoon pool weaves and meanders around the main courtyard area with bridges, tropical plants and a sunken bar. Music plays most of the day here, boosting the holiday-party atmosphere, but something to consider if you’re after a quieter relaxing hotel (we’d suggest looking elsewhere if that's the case). Curtained pavilion-style beds and sun lounges provide ample reclining options. The poolside open-style restaurant dishes up weekly special events including all-you-can-eat Jimbaran-style seafood and rib nights, as well as your included buffet breakfast.
If you’re looking for a fun atmosphere and clean rooms close to Kuta’s clubs and nightlife, Grand Barong Resort is a good option. If the idea of a sports bar puts you off, check out the funky bars and pools with cinema screen at hipster-style Sol House or for a more family feel midrange hotel with a bit of lawn for the kids to run about, consider Dewi Sri Hotel.
