One of Kuta’s originals, Poppies Cottages started life in the early 1970s, giving its name to the street on which it still sits. Over the years cottages have been added and upgraded, and the beautiful tropical garden has grown. Today the delightful hotel sits amid calm and lush surrounds, a world away from its namesake hectic laneway.

Twenty private, well-appointed brick and thatch cottages are arranged in groups of four in a swastika pattern (a reference to Balinese Hindu culture), linked by meandering paths throughout the tranquil grounds. Water features tinkle and birds sing as tropical fragrances waft on the breeze—almost a Balinese cliche.

The well-maintained spacious cottages have high peaked ceilings, cooled with air-con, or open the windows and flick on the ceiling fan if you’d prefer a more natural breeze. The style is comfortable, unpretentious and authentic with handcrafted furniture and traditional textiles. A built-in seating nook is perfect for a game of cards or a holiday boardgame or you could just turn on the TV. Beds are comfy with crisp white linen enhanced with pretty batik runners.

Semi-outdoor ensuite bathrooms feature sunken baths, hot-water rainfall showers and an appealing outdoor garden and shower. Private terraces furnished with comfortable rattan chairs offer a secluded view of the garden and a blissful position to enjoy the included breakfast delivered to your door daily (how good is that?).

The magical pool setting drips with colourful bougainvillaea reflected in the small but inviting organic-shaped swimming pool. Hidden nooks conceal shaded sun lounges and a Jacuzzi. A poolside bar can whip you up a pina colada, famously served here in a coconut carved to look like a mythical Barong.

Friendly staff are charming and professional; some have been with Poppies Cottages for more than 30 years, a credit to the place—happy staff equal happy guests, many of whom are repeat customers.

It's a real Kuta oasis.

We think Poppies Cottages is terrific, as it offers the ideal breathing space from Kuta’s crazy chaos. It’s well worth considering if it’s within your budget. If it’s too much of a stretch budget wise, more purse-friendly Mimpi Bungalows is another good option.
