Funky-meets-traditional style at Borough Capsule Hotel, on a dogleg corner of Jalan Padma Utara in Legian and which opened its doors in mid-2017. They had not yet opened their doors when we popped by in June 2017, but some beds were made up and the rooftop plunge pool was filled, waiting for the first guests to arrive.

Entry is via the street-front hole-in-the-wall cafe (opposite Osstel), where you’ll find air-con capsule dorms spread over several floors in 14-bed, four-bed and two-bed combos, including double sized capsules suitable for a couple, with 62 beds in total.

Rooms are bright, with natural light in several that we viewed (but not all) and the pods are oversized, configured feet out along one wall, with roomy lockers opposite. Traditional patterned tiled floors add a bit of Indonesian style to the modern pale wood pods and quality spring mattresses and white linen bestow hotel quality. Pods are equipped with individual lighting, powers sockets and a fold-down desk for a bit of nighttime Netflix on your device. You can pull down blinds for privacy. Sturdy metal and wood ladders lead to the top bunks.

Share bathrooms are smart and modern, with white mosaic tiles and round mirrors echoing the round washbasins. Hair dryers are provided as are international plugs if you bring your own. Hot-water showers and toilets are housed in separate cubicles. Double dorms enjoy ensuite bathrooms.

Instagrammable street-style artworks and the odd hip piece of furniture dot the common spaces. Capsule Hotel and pod-style dorms are a dime-a-dozen in this part of Bali, but what captured our eye here, other than it being brand spanking new, is the fab if small rooftop hangout area, with a postage stamp of a plunge pool (you wouldn’t/couldn’t want all 62 bods in there at once) and views across the rooftops to the sea. Sun-shaded cushioned benches and tables offer a comfy spot to indulge in a tipple from the (soon to be open) bar.

We had a chat with the owner who is keen for the hostel to remain as pristine as we saw it. He hadn’t quite worked out pricing as yet, but gave us some ballpark figures (we think they’re a bit on the steep side considering breakfast is not planned to be included). Cafe-style snacks and decent coffee is available from Morning Glory, the cafe below. Even though Borough Capsule Hotel is close to the beach as the crow flies it’s a 10-minute walk, as the fancy beachfront resorts have commandeered all the access lanes. For a more traditional bunkbed style hostel with a pool, check out The Island Hotel Bali.
