Baleka Resort is a mid-sized, family-friendly hotel smack in the middle of Legian. The hotel stretches from Jalan Werkudara to Jalan Pama Utara housed in double- and triple-storey blocks edging the length overlooking two swimming pools.

A triple-storey modern block sits at the Jalan Pama Utara end, but the pick of rooms are in the older, more traditional-style buildings that have been given a recent fresh facelift (completed early 2017) located on the Jalan Werkudara side. Spruced up classic and lagoon rooms are the categories to go for here as they’re much better value than the somewhat ordinary superior or deluxe rooms (cheaper classic rooms really are better than superior or deluxe).

Spotless air-con rooms are bright and airy with ample space, even in the smaller rooms. New renos offer freshly painted tasteful modern interiors decked out with whitewashed furniture and comfy beds with Indonesian decorative elements adding a bit of local style. Ample storage, a desk, bedside tables, decent lighting and amenities including TV with cable channels, minibar, safe and tea kettle will leave you want for nothing. Clean ensuite hot-water bathrooms are equipped with bathtubs in classic and lagoon rooms (and some of the deluxe rooms). Furnished balconies and terraces provide some outdoor living space.

The swimming pool on the Jalan Pama Utara side seems to attract the drunken rowdy crowd (another reason to avoid these rooms, unless of course you enjoy the party), while the lagoon pool at the other end is more family friendly, with a shallow end for the kids. Both pools offer sun lounges and shaded spots with tropical foliage punctuating the mostly paved grounds.

Buffet breakfast is included, served in the street-side Gula Gula Restaurant, but can be a bit crowded at busy times. The restaurant offers all-day dining with a sports bar vibe (non-stop footy on the TV). All in all Baleka Resort is solid midrange option.

Note that the reception is temporarily (as of mid-2017) located in the restaurant on Jalan Pama Utara, but will move to Jalan Werkudara once renovations are complete. Baleka Resort gets busy during Australian school holidays, so book ahead at these times. If you’d prefer to be closer to the beach, Hotel Puri Raja offers older-style midrange rooms and a lovely garden opposite the sea and sand.
