Budget surfers don’t have much choice in Medewi, and while we did note a couple of online deals with rooms less than 150,000 rupiah, no one was around at any of them to view these places, and of the meagre offerings we saw, Mai Malu was easily the cleanest, nevertheless we’d have one less Bintang and cough up a little more for a tad more comfort.

But we know, sometimes a budget is a budget and when you’re dead tired from a day in the surf (and with a few Bintangs) you probably won’t care. A short walk from the waves at Medewi Point, Mai Malu’s location can’t be beaten for the price, though you will have to suffer the constant traffic noise from the passing trucks and the call-to-prayer from the nearby mosque. A range of rooms are on offer at this modest place, shared with their popular cafe in a double-storey building.

Tiny single rooms may be a little stuffy, but a fan will stir the air in the long hot nights and windows can be opened for a whiff of salty air. Tiled floors gleam, linens are clean and the mattresses on the wooden beds don’t seem too saggy. The rooms offer a spot to rest your drink and phone too with a small set of draws or cupboard as well as power outlets to charge the latter. Ensuite bathrooms are old and stained, but clean with Western style toilets and a cold-water shower.

More spacious twins and doubles on the upper floor are brighter and airier, but friendly staff mentioned they are also a tad noisier. Mai Malu offers air-con options too, although still with cold-water showers and for the price of these rooms better value is to be found elsewhere. Pleasant communal areas provide a spot to relax and the breezy upper balcony enjoys a bit of a sea view.

A simple breakfast is included in the rate, but don’t get too excited, if you’re going to surf all day you’ll probably want to pay for something more substantial. Mai Malu’s restaurant is regularly packed with folks seeking pizzas and burgers at reasonable prices as well as seafood and local fare too. Despite our somewhat negative take, Mai Malu is not a bad deal and this long running joint has been keeping surfers happy for over 20 years, so they must be doing something right.

Alternatively The Anara Surf Camp at Yeh Sumbul offers good online rates with favourable reviews and walking around the outside the joint looked decent too but the only staff about couldn’t show as a room nor offer any information. For folks whose budget stretches to the air-con rooms at Mai Malu better value is found at Kirra’s Beach House in Pulukan which adds views and a hot shower too. Another option are a whole bunch of friendly guesthouses and surf camps in Medewi Village including Padi Surf Villa with views, air-con and hot water, and Medewi Surf Homestay where an equivalent spend will score you a character-filled fan-cooled room and cold shower and with very friendly vibes.
