Sea Medewi offers decent value rooms in a resort style hotel facing the beach at Yeh Sumbul.

Behind the double-storey lobby with restaurant above, two neat rows of cute red brick duplex cottages face a swimming pool, and further back, with a short climb up some stairs, duplex ocean-view rooms are staggered up the small slope. Climbing further back the long narrow property, the upper level encompasses a spacious double-storey function room, another swimming pool and a small grassy area ideal for kids to run about.

Tiled air-con interiors are bright, modern, clean and spacious with the ocean-view rooms offering a bit more feline-swinging capacity, and although the sea can certainly be seen from these rooms, a half-wall obscures the view when you are in bed, a major design flaw in our opinion. Wooden furnishings adorn the simple rooms and counts comfy beds, bedside tables with lighting, desk and storage space. Thick and springy mattresses sport clean white linen, brightened with bed runners. Mod-cons include a small safe, tea kettles with accoutrements for a cuppa and flatscreen TVs with cable channel—larger ones in the upgraded rooms, but in both cases positioned to the side of the bed, so you either have to lie sideways or crank your neck to watch. Fridges are not filled, but at twice the size of a regular mini-bar fridge leave plenty of room to stock up on Bintangs.

Ensuite bathrooms could do with a scrub in the corners, but are generally clean and offer semi-screened hot-water showers heated by gas tanks (if the water is cold, they have simply run out of gas, so let the staff know). Towel racks and bench space is limited, but ample, but the placement of the toilet roll in the sea-view rooms means you either need very long arms or should grab a handful before you are seated.

Furnished terraces make a pleasant spot to enjoy the lovely garden and get an eyeful of the sea vista from the sea-view rooms. The inviting wiggly organic shaped swimming pool at the front of the hotel sports blue checkerboard tiles and offers a couple of rattan lounges but little shade while the larger pool at the back enjoys a little shelter from the surrounding palms and building. As well as a couple of lounges, the airy open lobby is equipped with a pool table and a freezer full of ice creams!

The second storey restaurant bags a terrific breezy ocean view and serves a very decent included full breakfast with several choices and other meals too, however the blackboard menu is different to the printed menu, and we were informed that most items on the blackboard menu were unavailable and it was old, and the printed menu was new—we don’t know why they simply don’t wipe off the old menu and save guest frustration. What is on offer is mostly Western choices, but our advice is that unless you like your pizza with sweet jam-like sauce, don’t order the pizza. Daily happy hours offer discounted drinks timed perfectly to enjoy the setting sun.

We love the fact that they promote refilling your water bottle here too, and although they do provide plastic bottles of water in the rooms, it’s a start. Sea Medewi’s staff are super friendly and helpful and can help with surfing info, transport and tours. Discounts and upgrades may be available for walk-in guests.

If your requirements are nothing bar a comfy bed, air-con and a hot shower, Villa Khalisha’s rooms are more simple but offer terrific ocean views and a lovely swimming pool with less pricey no-view rooms available too. Alternatively rooms at The Point and Medewi Beach Inn are not as good value, but are both located a short walk from Medewi Point.
