If you can’t see the waves, the next best thing is a rice paddy view, and set back in Medewi village, just over one kilometre from the beach a handful of friendly homestays offer not only views but genuine Balinese hospitality, and while we were torn as to our preferred option, Pink Barrel got our vote.

Set at the back of a family compound, Pink Barrel just edges in simply for the fact that this terrific spot offers not only spacious comfortable rooms with air-con and hot showers, cracking cill-out areas with sweeping views, but a swimming pool to boot. Run buy a local family and their Swedish surfer dude partner who they describe as “a brother from another mother” this friendly trio not only know the best waves and can sort you out with lessons too, we’re assured the home-cooked food on offer will mean you won’t even care to venture to the local restaurants.

The double-storey building houses two rooms on the top floor and a third on the bottom, but the lower level fan-cooled room is usually reserved “just for friends” however if you prefer not to climb the stairs (or are after a cheaper deal), they may be up for negotiation. At the time of research in May 2018, two freestanding wooden bungalows in the back garden overlooking the swimming pool and rice fields were under construction and looked most appealing, although the rate was not yet set, they will be “a bit more expensive”. Currently the rooms up for grabs can be configured as a double or twins and despite one of the owners being Swedish there’s not a stick of Ikea in sight (their joke).

The spotless tiled interiors are bright and airy with windows on either side to enjoy the views. Beds are comfy, although mattresses are not that thick, but linens and towels are clean and soft. The simple additions of bedside tables and reading lamps always puts a smile on our face. Bathrooms are clean, despite a bit of grime in the corners and slightly more stylish than you would expect in a basic homestay with stone-effect tiles and washbasin as well as ample shelving and bench space.

Even though the rooms are plenty comfortable, we’d be hanging out on the wide wooden decked shared veranda, probably mesmerised by the verdant terraces beyond, though likely tempted by the sparkling blue pool too. If you take a dip, be sure to slap on the sun block though as it doesn’t get much shade.

The kitchen is downstairs where you can order a healthy breakfast and seasonal juices (at an additional charge) and also check the tides from the handy chart. If you’re feeling a bit sore for your efforts in the barrels, be sure to head across the road to Medewi Surf Homestay, the home of massage maestro, Haji Ugis. His magic healing hands don’t come cheap, but as he mentioned to us “if you want a cheap massage, go to the beach”, he is a professional and will give you possibly one of the best massages you’ll ever have, but do expect pain!

If Pink Barrel are full, Medewi Surf Homestay’s rooms also have the goods when it comes to decent views (and a wonderful welcome), but it’s cold-water showers only here. If your budget is a little tighter check out Padi Surf Villa, one of the best value digs in this area.
