Cheapest sleep in town
If you are after a cheap sleep with a view in Munduk, one homestay with a great deal has a name that nails it: One Homestay.
They offer four simple clean rooms, all with hot water, and they take full advantage of the magnificent view.
Two budget rooms are the cheapies on offer; you’ll have to sit on the balcony to enjoy the views in these rooms as windows are tiny, and with tiled walls there’s a bit of a hospital feel, but you’ll be out hiking anyway. The other two rooms are bigger and smarter, with larger windows and nicer decor, however you’ll pay a bit more. The budget rooms are best described as very basic. The one on reception level is the smallest, and here you’ll have the balcony to yourself, while the other shares a balcony with the two fancier rooms, and the room is a little less poky. Wooden beds provide patterned cosy duvets and mosquito nets, and the smaller budget room has a bedside table (the one in the larger budget room wasn’t beside the bed, but could be moved). Power sockets are plentiful, but there’s not much juice in them; signs request not to use hairdryers, water heaters and other power draining electrical equipment, or you’ll blow the fuses. Bathrooms are clean and basic with somewhere to put your toiletries, but a little stained in the corners. You’ll have to provide your own soap and towels here, although a thin towel is available on request. The wooden chairs on the balconies are where you’ll be wanting to spend your time; use the free WiFi, or just admire the view taking in the cool mountain air.
One Homestay was one of the few we visited that don’t include breakfast in their rates, however several warungs are nearby; the attached restaurant, Warung One, opens at 13:00. Warung One also offers cooking classes (you could cook your own late breakfast). Even without breakfast, One Homestay is the best budget deal in town, but you’ll have to be quick as it’s almost always booked out. Find it about 100 metres along the small street that runs next to Guru Ratna; just follow the signs.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
