Old-school homestay with views

More on Munduk

Quaint Taman Ayu is a rambling family-run, old-school homestay.

Travelfish says:

The highlight here is the cute almost Juliet-style balconies overlooking the clove plantations that invite you to linger and enjoy the sounds of buzzing cicadas and croaking frogs.

It’s a little like stepping into a time machine entering the well maintained rooms; everything is a little mismatched but comfortable and functional, the antithesis of the more modern cookie-cutter style hotels found elsewhere. Seven small to mid-size rooms step down the slopes on the northern side of the ridge off Munduk’s main road. Whitewashed walls and tiled floors are clean and beds are comfortable. Black and white gingham valances are a nod to Balinese poleng cloth, a symbol of the cosmic duality of balance in the universe. Bright patterned blankets add splashes of colour. Nets keep the mozzies at bay, and small fans keep it breezy. Mismatched patterned tiled hot-water bathrooms are clean, but a little stained. Small windows open onto those oh-so-cute balconies where a couple of wooden chairs squeeze in to offer views out to sea on a clear day. Free WiFi doesn’t quite reach the lower rooms, but is fine in the attached restaurant.

Taman Ayu’s open airy warung follows the same quirky local style with colourful zigzag tablecloths, a mix of bamboo and pink-painted wooden chairs and a small forest of hanging pot plants. Views are excellent, beer is cold, tourist favourites are available at reasonable prices and they offer cooking classes too. Breakfast is included. We love the welcoming family atmosphere, but as this is a family home, some travellers may be uncomfortable with the local tradition of keeping birds in cages, of which there are several here. Taman Ayu Homestay offers reasonable value at low season prices, however in high season it’s a bit high for what’s on offer, so you may want to compare deals about town. Watch the steep slippery driveway on the way down after rain — it can be treacherous. If Taman Ayu is full, Taman Sari Guesthouse also have great private balconies with similar views.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
