Charming tropical stay, excellent value
Set back from the road in a leafy sculpture and pond-filled tropical garden, Pondok Agung Bed and Breakfast is our top flashpacker pick in the Nusa Dua area.
Here you’ll find a range of nine lovely stone, wooden and bamboo double-storey bungalows and rooms surrounding a weeny kidney-shaped swimming pool. The spotless air-con rooms are airy and charming, each unique but with a shared homely, tropical vibe. If you prefer the natural breeze to air-con, all rooms provide ceiling fans and windows that open, some with shutters that can be sealed to stay dark for a holiday sleep-in too.
The classically styled decor is slightly dated, but we think that the comfortable wooden and rattan furnishings add to the charm. It’s such a pleasure to see a thoughtfully designed room with storage, lighting, seating, desks and switches that will leave you wanting for naught. Beds sport decent mattresses and clean soft linens, some with mozzie nets too. Amenities include flatscreen TVs, a mini-fridge and a safe and one room is equipped with a small fully equipped kitchen, great for a longer stay or travellers with small kids. Ensuite bathrooms are clean and fresh, some semi-outdoor style, and though older-style offers ample bench space with hot-water showers and built in hairdryers. Rooms enjoy furnished terrace and balconies, some large enough to be complete living areas.
Within the garden an open pavilion houses a small library and long dining table although your included breakfast is served in the “breakfast warung” at the front of the guesthouse amid more tropical lushness of cascading bougainvillea and lily-filled ponds. A handful of shaded sun lounges surround the spotlessly clean clear blue swimming pool that almost looks too pristine within the natural surrounds, and though small is perfect to cool off after a day’s excursion.
Pondok Agung Bed and Breakfast’s attentive staff are friendly and helpful with excellent English. The guesthouse is on the main drag at Tanjung Benoa, a stone’s throw from water-sport fun and some excellent eating. To get around, the guesthouse has a couple of pushbikes to hire—free to guests who book direct!
We love the personal feel of this lovely guesthouse and can’t fault it, but if you would like more resort-style facilities and a tad more space, traditional style Rumah Bali is pricier, but a charmer. Pondok Agung Bed and Breakfast is a popular spot so as they say book early to avoid disappointment, however if they are full several pleasant and friendly guesthouses dot the back streets of Tanjung Benoa. While most are characterless modern cookie-cutter brick and glass jobs, Puri Clinton Homestay, Alam Bali Hotel and Palm Garden are worth considering or, if you are looking for a place with a kitchenette check out Kubu Green.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
