For travellers with a limited budget but keen on absolute beachfront digs around the Nusa Dua / Tanjung Benoa area, Bali Reef Resort is a lovely traditional Balinese-stye resort smack on the beach at the northern end of Tanjung Benoa that may fit the bill.

Edging a tree-lined path leading to the waters edge within a leafy landscaped garden, two rows of duplex brick cottages house the comfortable, well-maintained, classically styled rooms. Tiled, air-con, spick and span interiors are spacious and bright with wooden furnishings that some may say are slightly dated, but well appointed nevertheless. Bouncy beds sport clean linen and mod-cons include flatscreen TVs, DVD players, minibar, safe and tea-making facilities. We like that drinking water is supplied in glass bottles and they even provide a corkscrew! Ensuite bathrooms sparkle, equipped with hot-water showers and ample bench space.

The beautiful garden can be enjoyed from your shady furnished private terrace, and some even enjoy a sea view too. Wander down to the smallish but relaxing organic-shaped beachfront swimming pool where you can swim up to the swim-up bar, grab a poolside lounge on the deck or just take up residence on the sand in one of the hotel’s umbrellaed beach chairs. The laid-back (no jacket required) open-style beachfront restaurant serves your included la carte breakfast and in the evening offers entertainment under the stars—occasional live music or traditional dancing. You can enjoy their “happy 24 hours” at the bar here too!

We like the unpretentious feel of this charming intimate resort, the ideal spot to relax and feel at ease. Although their published rates are a little high, the walk-in deal we were offered was excellent value, and friendly staff mentioned that it is sometimes even better online. Professional staff are friendly and accommodating, all up a solid pick in this area.

If you are not so fussed with a beachfront location, try to nab a deal at the gorgeous Rumah Bali or if your budget is tighter the delightful Pondok Agung Bed and Breakfast. Alternatively if Bali Reef Resort is fully booked and beachfront is desired (and you are not so fussed by a somewhat tired room), Matahari Terbit enjoys a pleasant beachfront pool and restaurant and offers competitive rates.
