Dotted around the backstreets of Tanjung Benoa, a number of friendly guesthouses offer similar modern-styled rooms, many with swimming pools and pretty gardens and one we were impressed by is Palm Garden.

Set around 150 metres back from the main road, within a walled compound, two rows of longhouse style rooms edge the beautiful palm filled garden facing a small but inviting swimming pool, with an open-air restaurant to the side. Air-con cooled rooms are spacious, bright and clean with gleaming tiled floors and glass sliding doors that open to a private furnished terrace and the garden. While curtains offer privacy, they are a tad thin so if you are disturbed by morning light, pack an eye mask.

Interiors are modestly furnished, with a comfy bed, bedside tables with lamps, and in the room we viewed, a narrow desk and small bench style chair—no actual chair to sit at the desk and no real storage unless you put your bags on the bench! Amenities include a flatscreen TV with cable channels and a mini-fridge (taking up all the leg room under the desk). Ensuite bathrooms are simple but clean and provide ample bench space and a glass screened hot-water shower.

The garden and pool area is a delight and what makes this place, sparkling blue with checkerboard tiles and two short rows of comfy lounges for a spot of lazing poolside in the sun (though shaded by the palms)—grab a book from the small library if you haven’t packed your own. When the sun is shining and the bird are chirpy, it really feels like a holiday—even if you haven’t yet hit the beach. And that’s another plus for Palm Garden—they offer a free shuttle service to the beach at Nusa Dua, saving you having to deal with the local transport mafia. Or you could simple hire one of their bicycles or scooters and ride there yourself.

A simple breakfast is included served in the pleasant garden restaurant. Kind and helpful staff are an asset too. We like the relaxing atmosphere and super clean rooms here, but you may also like Puri Clinton Homestay, Kubu Garden, Kubu Green, Alam Bali Hotel or Frangipani Homestay—all similar offerings with clean rooms and friendly hosts (although Frangipani has no pool), or if you’d like somewhere with a bit more character, try for a room at Pondok Agung Bed and Breakfast.
