If your purse can’t quite stretch to top dollar Batu Karang, but you’d still like to enjoy the view, Ware Ware Surf Bungalow won’t offer the same level of service or style, but this is easily ignored as you gaze out to sea at the fabulous vista.

Stepped up the hill, large brick bungalows edge a steep and not particularly well maintained path (watch your step), and the fitter you are the better deal you’ll get. Ware Ware seems to have recently split the property with another business, so rooms share the path and pool with another hotel that had not opened at time of research in mid-2017.

Once you’ve huffed and puffed your way inside to the spacious rooms, sit back and take in the view, but keep your gaze to the front as to the side is an unattractive, rubble-filled wasteland. Bright and airy air-con rooms are a tad basic and offer few facilities for the spend, but are tastefully decorated with a smart modern by-the-seaside style, with stone-finish tiles, freshly painted cream walls and rattan and whitewash furniture. It looks like it was recently renovated, although the vague staff couldn’t confirm. Clean ensuite bathrooms also looked new and have hot-water rainfall showers.

Furnished balconies are an ideal spot for a holiday read, although from some the view is slightly obscured by the neighbouring rooftop. A plunge-size infinity pool sits at the lower level overlooking the sea. Be quick to nab a sun lounger, though you’ll want to lather on the sun block as there’s not much shade.

Small pool, great view.

The attached bar and restaurant perches oceanside across the path, with a terrific double-storey deck to make the most of the setting sun. Grab a cocktail and let the cool tunes relax you into the night—the food gets a good rap here, too. Breakfast is included in the rate, and the view is just as good in the morning.

Staff could do with a bit of training and seemed pretty clueless and not very willing to answer inquiries; the case may be different when you’re a paying guest. Regardless, Ware Ware Surf Bungalow is one of the better value options along the headland, and it’s all about the view.
