Batu Karang

Batu Karang

Luxurious and private

More on Nusa Lembongan

Batu Karang is Nusa Lembongan’s go-to luxury honeymoon pick, though for a top spend, it wins on the view alone for anyone coming to the island. We indeed met a honeymooning couple who were staying here, and they were impressed, as were we (although we didn’t get to view their wedding suite).

Travelfish says:

Batu Karang clings to the headland, giving it terrific views over Jungut Batu and to Bali. Don’t let the steep hill put you off, as guests are ferried around by golf buggy. Sizeable rooms make the most of the sweeping vista with acres of glass, expansive verandas and open bathrooms with tubs so you can check the surf while you soak, feeling utterly private.

Contemporary Asian interiors have cool stone floors, teak furnishings, high thatch ceilings, mosquito-netted beds and daybeds for lounging about and getting into holiday mode. Amenities include all the mod-cons you would expect for top dollar. Choose from three swimming pools including a 25-metre lap pool, an infinity pool overlooking the bay and a more secluded pool with swim-up bar. Several of the villa-style rooms also have private plunge pools. If you prefer your water a little more salty or indeed with waves, the beach is only minutes away.

You'll also find a library, movie theatre, gym, spa, restaurants and bars—the latter three of which you don’t have to be guests to enjoy. Staff are charming and seemed well-trained. We commend Batu Karang’s environmental policies using low impact energy, water and waste systems as well as training and empowering locals through school programmes—it’s great to see fancy resorts participating in such practices.

At the time of our visit in July 2017, construction was beginning on a property next door. Though it’s no fault of the hotel, you may want to check if you don’t want building noise disturbing your holiday. While you can still experience similar views from cheaper places nearby, if you have the means to do it in style, Batu Karang is a fine choice. If you’d prefer a more intimate experience, The Point Resort offers just four rooms with stunning views in a more secluded location.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
