Within a relaxing Balinese-style walled compound, a trio of wooden pavilions and a tiny plunge pool punctuate a wide gassy garden at Tropica Shipwrecks.

The pavilions house three main rooms, a communal lounge and a fourth quirky budget room (not listed on their website or booking sites, however it's often full). Rooms are named after Nusa Lembongan’s surf breaks—Shipwrecks, a standalone family bungalow which can sleep four, and two double rooms, Playgrounds and Lacerations, connected by a gantry. The budget room is housed in the same pavilion as the main communal lounge.

In general, rooms here are looking a little tired and worn at the edges, and could do with upgrading, but they have good bones and competitive rates still make this a decent choice. With the exception of the budget room, they offer air-con, ceiling fans and outdoor style hot-water bathrooms. Spacious interiors feature natural materials with dark timber walls and floors, stone bathrooms and wooden and rattan furnishings including a romantic mosquito-netted four-poster bed, although much is in need of maintenance. Facilities include TV, DVD, minibar, a small safe as well as a hot and cold water dispenser along with the makings of a cuppa.

The family room enjoys a private furnished terrace, and the doubles a shared semi-outdoor seating area. The open-style communal pavilion is decked out with a kitchen, dining area (where your included breakfast is served) and comfortable lounge—a relaxing and inviting spot to while away a tropical afternoon. Just behind the lounge, a few steps lead down to the fan-cooled budget room with twin trundle beds—no mozzie nets here, so you may wish to pack one. The room is spacious and comfortable, but the main negative is that there is no ensuite; the bathroom is outside, past the communal area and down a set of stairs. If that doesn’t bother you, this is an excellent deal.

A good area to retreat to.

Apart from some foliage close to the rooms, the garden doesn’t get much shade, but the generous patch of grass is a good spot to run about or practise a downward dog. The postage stamp of a pool is a welcome addition on a hot day.

Although we’d like to see Tropica Shipwrecks returned to its former glory, that would likely mean a price hike, so if a few rough edges don’t bother you, this is a good value deal. If you’d prefer your wooden bungalow a little more pristine (although a tad more cookie-cutter) and your pool a bit bigger, consider Putra 7 Cottage, newly opened in early 2017.
