We can’t quite say that Bunga Bungalo is beachfront, as when the tide is high, the section of beach here all but disappears, but they certainly can claim oceanfront!

This small and somewhat quirky guesthouse offers a selection of six rooms behind their busy sandy-floored restaurant. Choose from doubles with air-con or a fan, a fan-cooled twin or quad and for a sea view, go for one of the four upstairs rooms. The old-school style here is reminiscent of when Bali was part of the hippy trail; you can all but smell the patchouli oil. Think large floral batik bedcovers, dreamcatchers, bamboo furniture and dingle-dangly shell curtains that catch the sea breeze. It may be overload for some, but the scruffy eclectic style has a certain retro charm.

Rooms are worn at the edges, but clean and bright, although the clinically obsessed may wish to look elsewhere. Windows in some rooms comprise ornately carved wooden shutters and no glass, which is good for a sleep-in. If you prefer the wafting salty air, you may wish to pack a mozzie net and a sleeping mask (and while you’re there, throw in the ear pugs!—roosters live nearby). Hot-water bathrooms continue the idiosyncratic bent with clam-shell basins in some.

Furnished balconies are decked out with a hodgepodge of daybeds and hammocks, a comfortable spot for contemplating your navel, the sea view, or trying to decide which wood-fired pizza to order for dinner from the attached restaurant. Along with pizza, the restaurant serves tasty local fare and icy Bintang and provides an assortment of board games, books and a friendly chilled vibe to meet other travellers. Do note that the friendly staff mentioned that it can get busy and the music continues until about 23:00, so you may as well join in the fun social atmosphere.

Included breakfast sweetens the deal. If quirky old-school charm appeals, but you’d prefer a quieter spot and a small swimming pool, consider the exceptionally friendly Ketut’s Bungalows, just along the beachfront.
