Clean and friendly family-run Nyuh Gading Homestay offers a range of rooms including dorm beds in double-storey brick blocks built around and over a restaurant and pool within a compact garden.

Simple and no-frills, the tiled air-con rooms are bright and airy with plenty of natural light. Ensuites have hot-water showers, including for the dorm—a good deal for single budget travellers. The four-bed mixed dorm is in an upper room at the back of the homestay overlooking a neighbouring leafy vacant block. If you stretch your neck you can just about see the sea (an agent would undoubtably sell it as ocean glimpses).

Wooden bunk beds sport decent thick mattresses and clean bedding, each with personal lighting and a power outlet. The bunks are separated with a central curtain offering offer a little privacy and semi blocking the light if your roommates are reading. Decently sized lockers and smaller lockable cupboards will keep your bags and valuables out of the way. The shared combo bathroom-toilet ensuite, was pretty clean when we checked, although it had not yet been serviced.

Other rooms are all doubles with either garden views (ground floor) or sea-views (upper floor). Rooms with views are pricier but with basically similar clean and functional interiors. Along with a comfy double bed and ample storage, private rooms add a handy mini-fridge, small safe and furnished balcony or terrace overlooking the garden.

The smallish narrow swimming pool is almost long enough for a lap, starting under the shade of the seaview rooms extending into the sunny leafy garden, with bean bags and sun loungers providing a spot to work on the tan. The small semi-open restaurant looked a pleasant setting to enjoy a meal, but didn’t seem like they had much passing traffic as the homestay is located at the end of a lane. All the same they can whip up breakfast (not included in the rate) or according to the sign, a birthday cake. Nyuh Gading Homestay is a little hard to find, tucked down a narrow lane off the lane behind World Diving—look for the signs.
