In the quieter backstreets of Jungut Batu village, D’Mel Sari is tucked away down a leafy lane away from the main road and traffic noise.

This unpretentious and friendly guesthouse is housed in a single-storey longhouse block, facing a row of similarly styled superior brick bungalows, all with a pretty garden outlook. Tiled interiors offer no surprises, but are spacious, clean and practical with a good comfortable bed and an array of mismatched furniture. Choose from air-con or fan-cooled (some with ceiling fan, others with standard fan) twins or doubles. All rooms provide a TV (older box style in some) and a mini-fridge. Basic tiled ensuite bathrooms will win no design awards, but deliver a decent hot shower.

Cute chalets.

A furnished private terrace allows you to kick back and enjoy the birdsong in the tropical garden and dry your bikini in the sun on the clothing rack. Order an icy Bintang or juice from the kitchen and settle in for the afternoon. Deluxe bungalows, besides not sharing a wall, have a little more cat swinging potential, but are otherwise identical.

At the front of the guesthouse an open-style dining pavilion serves your included breakfast (or you can eat on your terrace if you prefer). If it’s not adequate, just ask for more at no additional charge.

More than the rooms (which are decent), this modest guesthouse charms with its friendly and helpful owner. Ketut is keen to be the perfect host and can help with transport and excursions at fair prices as well as suggesting eateries. Or just enjoy a good old natter about the local culture with him.

D’Mel Sari is along a dirt track off the road that leads to Green Garden Warung (also worth checking out). It may seem secluded, but is still only minutes from the beach. For similar, but slightly smarter rooms De Indra Nusa Inn was newly opened when we visited in July 2017, although it’s on the main road and doesn’t offer the same pleasant garden atmosphere.
