For a little champagne on a beer budget, Kawans Inn present their modest guesthouse rooms villa-style, each with an enclosed private garden and two with a private plunge pool.

Set behind their streetfront cafe on Jalan Jungut Batu, a narrow paved path leads to the row of rooms behind a high grey wall punctuated with entrance gates and creeping greenery. Within you’ll find the same basic tiled brick bungalow-style room that is fairly standard around town, but what would usually be a terrace is replaced by a small leafy paved garden and some outdoor furniture with an umbrella for shade. It’s ideal if you enjoy a little privacy, although you’ll probably still hear the neighbours.

Rooms are simple but clean.

A little bit of effort has gone into making the simple interiors inviting, with coloured feature walls in some, coloured bedding and artwork, but don’t expect villa luxury. Furnishings include a comfy bed with side tables (but only one lamp in all the rooms we viewed), and some open storage. Higher category rooms add a mini-fridge, a TV in the family room and of course a private pool, but only in one family and one deluxe room—there is no common pool. Ensuite bathrooms are clean and simple with hot-water showers, but lack any hanging space or hooks, however there’s a tiny bit of bench space for your potions. Unfortunately the private pool rooms were occupied when we visited, so can’t offer an eyewitness account of them.

Kawans Inn includes a simple breakfast in the rate served in the cafe, but if you’d like to add an espresso (they have a real coffee machine), it’s an additional charge. This is a great little guesthouse for couples or introverts, but if you’d like somewhere conducive to chatting with the neighbours and making new friends, look elsewhere.

This is a popular spot, with the private pool rooms in particular a hit, so book early. Alternative private garden-style rooms with traditional bamboo bungalows are on offer at Secret Garden, but there the swimming pool is shared. For a less private but simple and charming alternative, across the shared path from Kawans Inn is friendly Nusa Bagus Homestay.
