Locomotive Hotel and Spa was new when we visited in mid-2017 and bills itself as a city-style hotel.

While it would probably be more at home in Jakarta or Yogya, the smart cosy rooms with a bit of a hipster vibe are a comfortable midrange option. Set between the beach and the main road, the modern double-storey block overlooks a decently sized swimming pool and a patch of sand—not quite a beach view, but the closest you’ll get in the backstreets. Three pool-access rooms occupy the ground floor along with the restaurant and spa, and seven other rooms are on the second level with minute Juliet balconies overlooking the rooftops towards the sea, just enough to catch the setting sun (but not the ocean).

Smart modern rooms.

Air-con rooms are rather compact, but designed well enough that you won’t be tripping over your bags. The neutral palette is calming, with wood-patterned tiled floors and whitewashed wooden built-in furnishings. Nice thick mattresses guarantee a comfortable sleep and linens are crisp and clean. Recessed lighting behind the bedhead adds mood and possibly light for reading in bed (although it didn’t look that bright in the daytime). Amenities include a flatscreen TV and a small safe. Glass sliding doors open to the furnished balconies—watch your knees as you sit, or they’ll hit the railings. Neighbouring rooftops are a bit too close for our liking, and we’d rather enjoy the outdoor space by the pool instead.

Pool-access rooms offer a wider furnished terrace and more pleasant (but less private) outlook. The small hot-water ensuite bathrooms up the hipster style with polished cement walls and a funky built-in cement washbasin, although there’s not much elbow room and the toilet will get wet when you shower.

We love the swimming pool here, even if there’s really not much to it bar a rectangle long enough for a lap, but the aqua colour appeals and the housemade beach is a fun touch. There’s very little shade, so slap on the sunblock. Since we visited they’ve added some Instagrammable nest-style seating too—very in vogue in Indonesia at the moment.

Included breakfast offers several options including local choices and is served in the somewhat sparse looking restaurant. The on-site spa offers affordable pampering, but was set up for a photoshoot when we popped in; an overwhelming display of towel swans made us quickly retreat—you never know when they’ll attack!

Very friendly staff can sort you out with bikes and scooters as well as booking snorkelling trips. Walk-in rates we were offered were a better deal than online, so shop around. For modern smart rooms in more a bungalow-like setting, Pondok Baruna Garden up the lane is also worth considering.
