Sanghyang Bay Villas, a newcomer to the Mushroom Bay area, is set back in the village a short stroll to the shore and offers a mix of thatch-roofed round bungalows and lumbung-style huts around a freeform pool.

We were only able to view the spherical bungalows as the lumbungs were occupied, at this early 2017-opened property. Though we thought they were delightful, the friendly owner insisted that the others are better.

Generous interiors make good use of the difficult circular footprint with built-in furnishings moulded from the same cement finish as the walls, giving an organic handcrafted impression of a traditional dwelling. The central mosquito-netted bed offers a plump mattress and quality linens. A built-in cushioned day bed and curtained storage cling to either side, and to the rear the ensuite bathroom and fittings are all made in the same organic manner.

Even though the style is traditional, mod-cons are not lacking and rooms are equipped with air-con, a mini fridge, a safe and the makings for a cuppa. The wood and thatch lumbungs add a smart TV into the mix. We found the rooms pleasantly cool, perhaps helped by the stunning high thatched ceiling.

Wide and shady furnished terraces either face the pool, or the garden for more privacy. The lumbungs with semi-outdoor style ensuites looked decent from outside, but also looked similar to many of the prefab identikit (but nevertheless traditional-style) huts that are common around Nusa Lembongan. The unique round rooms appeal to us.

A large (and bordering on kitsch) fish spews water into the oversized swimming pool, which the owner boasted was “the largest pool in Nusa Lembongan”—it is big, but he obviously hasn’t visited Mahagiri Resort. Poolside, shady loungers offer a spot to unwind and admire the pretty and spacious, but young grassy garden. Once the garden has established a bit Sanghyang Bay Villas will be an even more appealing offer.
