In a village location near Sandy Bay, don’t be shocked by the large tree-climbing komodo dragon at the entrance to the delightful and intimate Komodo Garden, we assure you he won’t bite.

Here a handful of tightly packed, whitewashed wooden lumbungs and an open-air restaurant surround a small pool and lush garden. Air-con interiors are simply but tastefully decorated with comfortable furnishings including mozzie nets and bouncy beds.

The interior space is compact, with no room for bedside tables, however a wide bedhead shelf does the trick for somewhere to lay down a book and hold a couple of lamps, although they appeared more of the romantic atmosphere kind rather than for reading in bed. Built-in storage holds a well-stocked minibar, safe and hanging space. Watch your step as you head into the semi-open-air style ensuite bathroom. The one we viewed was a little basic compared to the style of the rest of the room, but still it offers a hot shower and somewhere to hang your towel.

Balconies are furnished with a cosy daybed, a pleasant spot to enjoy the garden and stretch your neck for a sea glimpse. The small infinity pool is cool and sparkly with a shallow section for the kids, but you’ll have to be quick to nab one of the few sun loungers.

No komodos in the pool.

Breakfast is included in the room rate, served in the poolside restaurant. We were charmed by this sweet hotel, but would not be impressed if the neighbours are noisy, as the thin thatch walls are literally only a metre or so apart and the traditional style is not very soundproof.

Staff could have been more welcoming when we popped by, but it was a wet and miserable day and that would make anyone a little ill-humoured. Guests we spoke to had no complaints. If you’d rather a sea view than a sea glimpse, check out Water Blow Huts at Dream Beach or Cliff Park near Sunset Beach, both with spectacular clifftop locations.
