We are suckers for a view, and Semabu Hills perched up in the hills above Toya Pakeh certainly delivers the goods.

The high-end resort-style hotel offers modern spacious suite-style rooms housed in a large triple-storey block facing a drop-dead gorgeous infinity swimming pool and views to Mt Agung in Bali (on a clear day).

The air-con tiled rooms provide ample cat-swinging space with a living room with kitchenette and separate bedroom, both with floor to ceiling glass sliding doors to enjoy the views. Decor is modern and comfortable, but a tad beige and bland for our taste, with no local design elements—you really could be anywhere, but we guess there is nothing to distract from the sweeping vista.

Bedrooms are equipped with bouncy twin or king-size beds with luxury linens, built-in desk, storage and flatscreen TV and lounges provide couches, low dining and another TV. The open-plan kitchenette houses a minibar, tea-making facilities and a bench with stools for dining, but no cooking facilities nor sink, however breakfast is included in the rate and the on-site restaurant and bar provide room service if you would prefer to dine privately.

Bathrooms offer separate hot-water shower and toilet facilities with ample bench space in the adjoining change room, but oddly the washbasin is attached to the wall away from the bench. Private terraces and balconies are furnished with a table and a couple of chairs to enjoy the outlook in the shade.

The ground-floor rooms lack a little privacy as they are only a few metres to the pool, and we prefer the higher floors, however there is no lift, but it is only a couple of stories high. Neat and trim lawns are punctuated with palm trees and a cascade of creepers hanging from the balconies adds a bit of tropical greenery.

The star of the show, the long blue rectangular infinity pool perched on the edge of the cliff is surrounded by wooden decking furnished with a row of umbrellaed sun loungers and tables and chairs or trot over the mini bridge to an island bale on the cliff edge—although kids (and drunk adults) will want to be carefully watched here, as there are no safety barriers.

The onsite restaurant enjoys the same great view but you’ll probably not want to eat every meal there and although the hotel is a little off the beaten track, they provide a daily free shuttle service to Crystal Bay and charming staff can arrange other transport.

If you are looking for a view and pool but Semabu Hills is a bit of a stretch on the purse strings, Bataran Garden Cottage in the hills east of Ped offers both with a row of lumbung-style rooms, however although the rooms are air-con cooled they somewhat basic for the price and only provide cold-water showers.
