If you plan to be out snorkelling, diving or sightseeing all day and all you want is a private space to sleep and shower, Yuda Homestay offers spacious clean no-frills rooms in the heart of Ped village walking distance to restaurants and bars.

Choose from fan-cooled or air-con rooms housed in simple brick longhouse blocks set back from the main road. Tiled interiors are somewhat stark with just a bed and dressing table and the main feature in each room seems to be the competing patterns of the sheets blanket and pillow cases, each room we looked at was equally mismatched.

Fan rooms are equipped with standard fans that barely do the job, but if you keep the windows open, the air flows sufficiently to not sleep in a sweat. We had no problem with mozzies, but in wet season you may wish to throw in a net or at least an electronic zapper.

Ensuite bathrooms are as bare-boned as the room, and perhaps the same decorator who choose the sheets was responsible for the mix of multi-patterned tiles here too. Bathrooms are wet-style with Western style toilet and cold-water showers and a mini washbasin located in the main sleeping room. The tap water has a bit of a funky smell, perhaps an excess of sulphur in the well? Shady terraces are furnished with tables and chairs, a pleasant spot to sit and chat to the neighbours or enjoy the newly established and soon to be pretty garden outlook.

Air-con rooms are all but identical to the fan rooms, except for the seemingly efficient air-con and the addition of a tiny flatscreen TV. Breakfast is not included, but the friendly owner runs a cheap and cheerful streetfront warung at the end of the driveway and a water dispenser is provided at reception to refill your bottles free of charge.

Yuda Homestay attracts a young backpacker crowd mostly due to the fact that it offers some of the least expensive private rooms on the island, and is the ideal place to meet new friends, and although it is not a rowdy “party” place, you are not immune to village noises like the nearby dawn cacophony of roosters—bring earplugs. We sometimes found it a bit hard to find any staff, but Pak Yuda or one of his family are usually hanging around the warung at the front.

Although the rooms at Yuda Homestay offer good value for Nusa Penida, the brick and tile rooms are a little soulless, so if your budget stretches to the air-con rooms, we prefer the compact budget bamboo rooms at Full Moon Bungalows for around the same price, but this place can get noisy from the nightly live music at their bar, alternatively the rooms at Pondok Kana or old-school style Nusa Penida Guest House, both in Batununggul also offer a little more character.

For single travellers on a budget who find Nusa Penida too hot and prefer air-con to a fan cooled room, dorm beds at Apit Lawang, two kilometres to the east are good value and you can enjoy the bonus of a swimming pool too.
