La Roja Bungalows enjoys a lazy beach-style ambience, even though it’s a few minutes walk to the sea.

This stylish midranger offers seven good-sized lumbung-style rooms surrounding a swimming pool and at the time of research (May 2018) were completing a row of smaller long-house style rooms next door (which will also have access to the pool).

Smart interiors.

The whitewashed wooden bungalows feature teak-red wooden shingled roofs with the signature lumbung curved A-frame shape. Spacious air-con interiors are clean and well appointed with white-washed wooden furnishings and mod-cons that include flatscreen TVs with DVD player, mini-bar and tea-making facilities. Our only negative comment is that the windows are very small, but rooms remain bright.

Stylish ensuite bathrooms feature glass-screened hot-water rain showers, and smart modern fittings with ample bench space. Private terraces face the pool, furnished with tables and chairs, or move a few steps to a poolside deckchair or sun lounge under a shady umbrella. The rectangular turquoise swimming pool is smallish, but still very inviting and fine for a short lap.

Imaginative and relaxing.

Although quite a bit smaller, we loved the style of the newer brick rooms with polished cement floors and traditional tile features. These rooms will also enjoy air-con, hot-water ensuites and TVs but friendly staff mentioned they will miss out on the mini-bar. Private terraces are furnished with stylish bamboo chairs and tables overlooking a newly planted garden. The open retro-style reception/lobby area also offers some spots to relax poolside.

La Roja Bungalows provides breakfast included in the rate and free transfers to the harbour. Staff are supper friendly and have a good command of English. A handful of decent restaurants are within walking distance, and staff can provide transport to eateries further afield as well as arrange tours and other transport.

We like the relaxing atmosphere at La Roja, but some guest may feel that the bungalows are a tad too tightly packed, but that seems to be the case with many guesthouses in Nusa Penida. You may also consider Namaste Bungalows with similar lumbung-style rooms in Crystal Bay or if the budget is a tad tighter, The Sandat Bungalows in Sakti is also a decent choice.
