Tucked away in a small lane near the ferry port, when we saw the sign pointing to a “traditional homestay” we were not expecting digs quiet as cute as Pondok Kana, and we were pleasantly surprised.

Within a walled family compound, a mixed bag of rooms are dotted around the pretty garden housed in wood and thatch or brick bungalows and a brick longhouse—we were only able to view the fan-cooled brick bungalow at this popular little spot.

Although simple, the good sized tiled interior is bright and clean, tastefully decorated with a shabby-chic distressed paint finish on the doors and furnishings which included a comfy mosquito-netted bed, bedside tables with lamps and a bench for your bag. Sliding glass doors flood the room with light, with sheer curtains for privacy and heavier drapes for when you don’t want it so light-flooded. Basic tiled ensuite bathrooms are clean with Western toilets and ample space for your toiletries, but offer cold-water showers only. Private terraces provide seating to enjoy the garden.

A thatched open-style mini-restaurant has been set up at the front of the compound with slabs of timber for benches and tables, decorated with temple umbrellas and Bob Marley posters. Here you can enjoy your included breakfast or hang out and meet other travellers while sipping a fresh juice or cold beer.

The friendly owner Wayan speaks English (although most of his family and staff don’t) and he can help to arrange tours or rent motorbikes. Pondok Kana is walking distance to a handful of restaurants and is a convenient spot if you are arriving or departing via ferry.

We like the cute style and friendly family atmosphere, but rooms are rather close together, good if you wish to make friends, but if you are after a private holiday escape, look elsewhere. As with much of the accommodation on Nusa Penida we think it’s a tad pricey, but comparatively it’s not a bad deal. if you are keen on a sea view, The Umah Prahu just up the road is an excellent option, or if a lovely garden outlook is the draw, check out Gepah Garden Cottage a few kilometres east.
