As sweet as the scent of its namesake flower, Gardenia Guesthouse blossoms in a pretty garden, tucked away behind their popular streetfront cafe and boutique at the southern end of Sanur.

A posy of gardenia-coloured cottages (that’s white for folks who don’t know their flowers), offers simple homely rooms minutes from the beach. The mostly duplex cottages face a cute plunge pool, one with a connecting a door ideal for families, and two that are wheelchair friendly with ramps, wide bathrooms and railings.

The white-washed theme extends inside the light, bright and airy rooms, spacious enough for an extra bed or a downward dog. Air-con and white tiled floors keep it cool. Simple understated decor introduces pops of pale green to the white furnishings, again echoing the fragrant bloom. Cosy beds sport smart clean linens with mozzie nets by request, and facilities include a TV (white to match), free WiFi, a safe, tea-making equipment and a fridge. Some rooms offer a small kitchenette, but all you can really do in it is make a cup of tea. Hot-water bathrooms are fairly spartan and a little shabby, but clean.

White-painted bamboo tables and chairs grace the small shared terraces, an opportunity to enjoy the tropical outdoors and get to know your neighbours. The small swimming pool is deep and while it offers no shade, it’s refreshing for a dip after a day of sightseeing. Enjoy the sun in a handful of white lounges.

Breakfast is included in the appealing Gardenia Cafe, and if it’s not substantial enough, you can graze all day from the reasonably priced menu. An attached boutique sells clothes, homewares and trinkets making for ideal gifts for friends and family back home.

Gardenia is located on tree-lined Jalan Mertasari in a quiet, mostly residential area, only 250 metres from the beach and beach-facing Power of Now Yoga Studio, and a short stroll to the action of central Sanur. We like the relaxed and personal atmosphere of this quaint little spot, perfect for a getaway for flashpacking families or folk who’d like a quiet stay near the beach.

Alternatively nearby Kolonial House has a similar vibe, or for a bit more of a spend, and further from the beach, Hotel Puri Tempo Doeloe is cute and quaint. If you’re after wheelchair accessibility, Semarandana is another possibility.
