Jukung Guesthouse

Jukung Guesthouse

Stylish and tranquil

More on Sanur

A jukung is a traditional Balinese fishing boat, and that’s what you’re looking for when you wander down the narrow lane not far from Hardy’s Supermarket in the middle of downtown Sanur. It’s also the cue for the traditional touches in the smart and bright contemporary rooms of this stylish little guesthouse.

Travelfish says:

Once you’ve found the boat (look up), head through the unassuming entrance which opens to a bright blue swimming pool edged with the rooms in two double-storey blocks. A bit of greenery adds colour and shade.

Traditional cement tiled interiors offer both air-con and ceiling fans with whitewashed wooden furniture and bamboo ceilings. The look is fresh and tranquil. All rooms offer the same facilities, the main difference being size. Beds are bouncy with smart white bedding. Expect nice touches like tea-making equipment and bathroom amenities hidden in woven bamboo baskets. Other facilities include a minibar, TV with cable and DVD player, free WiFI, safe and a desk. Bathrooms are spotless with hot-water rain-showers, the suite rooms adding a deep bathtub.

Furnished balconies and terraces overlook the pool, or you can lounge into one of the poolside beanbags—grab a book and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. The intimate ambience is lovely, but you wouldn’t want to be there with a rowdy group. Breakfast is included and cold drinks are available from the friendly staff at reception.

From the guesthouse to the beach is less than a 10-minute stroll, and you’re within spitting distance of shops and restaurants. We think Jukung Guesthouse offers great value, but a quick check of online prices were hugely discounted from what we were offed as a walk in, in which case, it’s a bargain.

If Jukung is full, try Semarandana for a similar atmosphere. Or if you have a whole lot more cash in your back pocket, other hotels with intimate courtyard pools include the smart and stylish Akanaor top-range Kejora Suites.
