More on Sanur

You probably wouldn’t notice D’Astri Guesthouse walking past, as it’s set behind a high fence.

Travelfish says:

Walk in though to discover a small, neat and smart guesthouse within a paved courtyard mostly taken up by a good-sized swimming pool.

Eight rooms in a double-storey block overlook the pool. A curtain of greenery cascades from the second floor, adding a tropical touch and offering a bit of shade. Simple contemporary-styled tiled air-con rooms are bright and spotless. Furniture is all built-in, in matching dark wood tones, contrasting with crisp white linen on the comfy beds. A small flatscreen TV with cable channels and mini-fridge add hotel-like luxury to this budget guesthouse. Opaque glass-screened bathrooms follow the same smart modern style and provide hot-water showers (and a free shadow show for others in the room). Washbasin and roomy bench sit at the back of the bedroom rather than behind the screen.

Upstairs balconies and downstairs verandas are sparsely furnished; we only saw one chair on each, but they could have been elsewhere. A fully equipped, spacious open share kitchen occupies one end of the courtyard, excellent for frying up an egg, as brekkie isn’t included in the rate. The pool is great for cooling off, but you’ll have to roll your towel out on the paving to get a tan, as there aren’t any lounges, nor much shade, bar a young frangipani tree. Off-street parking is available for motorbikes (or possibly one small car). WiFi is free, and guests mentioned it was reasonably speedy.

The guesthouse is less than a 10-minute walk to the beach, and only 120 metres to Pasar Sindhu night market for some tasty local fare. D’Astri Guesthouse attracts guests who like to stay a bit longer and offer discounted rates for monthly stays. We think it’s an excellent budget option; the rooms are better than some we’ve seen at twice the price. Neither the owner nor staff were around when we popped in, so some long-stay guests showed us around. When we called, staff were super friendly and spoke excellent English. A nearby alternative is the popular Little Pond Homestay, or a little further away, Louto Dmell Homestay has smart modern rooms, but no pool.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
