A strip of green, a patch of blue, a row of swaying palms, another patch of blue: the gorgeous grounds of The Samaya make a postcard-perfect image. An expansive grassy lawn and an absolute oceanfront sparkling lagoon pool await as you pour yourself into a sea-facing sun lounge and unwind.

This stunning luxurious oceanfront property is more villa-style than standard hotel. Back from the main pool, 30 walled private villas offer consummate privacy, but not sea views. Another 22 villas are located a buggy ride away, but if you’re going to be near the beach, we say go beach side.

Close the doors and indulge in indoor-outdoor tropical living in the vast light-filled modern villas, with private swimming pools—a decent size for a short lap—and leafy courtyard gardens. Modern sleek interiors are all marble and teak; think cool, sophisticated and elegant.

The palatial bathroom, oddly larger than the living room, includes an outdoor shower a separate indoor shower and a deep Jacuzzi-style tub that invites a long soak, as well as double basins in a room in which you’d be out of breath if you walked from one end to the other.

The beach awaits when you can tear yourself away from your room.

Breakfast and high tea are served oceanside at Breeze Restaurant or in your villa. We were impressed with the The Samaya’s environmental accolades: They are Green Globe certified and staff mentioned they recycle their cooking oil for biofuel and participate in a number of socially and environmentally responsible practices. We did notice plastic water bottles in the villas, so we hope it’s not just greenwashing as these bottles are easy to give up if the will is there.

Nevertheless, The Samaya appeals for its cool, calm approach. The atmosphere almost encourages you to speak in whispered tones, so if you’re after a discreet high-end seaside stay with plenty of breathing space, and you’re wallet is super-healthy, it may be for you.

Loads of privacy as you'd expect at one of Bali's best addresses.

Note that from January to March 2018 the main swimming pool will be closed for renovation. If a sea vista is more of a draw, The Legian offers views from your bedchamber and ultimate luxury, and for traditional Balinese style (mostly sans views too), try The Oberoi.
