Sharing an entrance on Jalan Drupadi with the excellent Villa Karisa (stay here if it’s within your budget), Karisa Pods is a compact stylish pod-style hostel with a small, but chilled courtyard swimming pool.

On offer are two-bed double-pod and 14-bed single-pod dorms as well as twin-pod private rooms, all with air-con and share hot-water bathrooms.

Single pods are arranged with your feet out for the full cocoon experience and are not huge, but offer personal lighting, local powerpoint, good thick mattresses with quality linens, microfibre pillows and a fluffy towel. Roomy built-in lockers behind your head offer extra security for peace-of-mind. Pull down the blind for privacy. Share bathrooms are clean, but the shower cubicles have only a shower curtain, not a lockable door.

Double-pods and twin-pod private rooms are housed in a separate section with their own share bathroom. The queen-sized double pods are ideal for a couple (you are still sharing a room with others), but pricey as the charge is per person, and as with the twin-pod private, the space outside the pod is very tight. We found both these styles of rooms very claustrophobic, but they are really just designed for sleeping anyway.

The chillout area has a relaxed Balinese holiday feel.

Communal areas, on the other hand, are terrific, with sofas, beanbags and long bench table in the open-style living room leading to the deep-blue plunge pool surrounded by tropical foliage, temple umbrellas and Balinese statures, creating a relaxing Balinese holiday atmosphere. A simple breakfast is included in the rate, and you can help yourself to coffee, tea or filtered water anytime; there’s also a microwave if you want to zap some instant noodles (although street food is better, trust us).

Karisa Pods is not a bad deal for single travellers in Seminyak, but for couples consider a private room at Umahku or for a basic old-school guesthouse with your own kitchen, C & N Guesthouse, both nearby on Jalan Drupadi. For younger (adult) travellers travelling with parents, consider booking Mum and Dad into Villa Karisa for some boutique upmarket relaxation while you hang with the cool kids in the pods.
