Quirky industrial-style caged walkways cascading with hydroponically grown creepers present the somewhat hipster-style of The Aswana.

Set a little back from Jalan Raya Seminyak, not far from Made’s Warung, this cute-as-a-button small modern hotel is fronted by a smart cafe (with good coffee), and the triple-storey U-shaped building wraps around a tiny courtyard swimming pool. Thirty twin and double rooms are on offer, 24 of which have pool views. The others look to the surrounding area, which the friendly staff described as “not much”.

Clean air-con interiors are cosy, compact and stylish, with fun elements that add a bit of character and move them up a notch from standard budget digs. Lighting, switches and power outlets are plentiful and where you expect them to be (unusual) and rooms are equipped with a flatscreen TV, safe and small desk. There’s not a ton of space for storage, but a shelf for your bag and hangers for your gowns. Simple and clean ensuite bathrooms have hot-water showers and ample bench space.

The pool abuts the building, and from the pool you can see directly into the ground-floor rooms. This also leaves almost no space for relaxing poolside, although a tiny deck offers two beanbags. It’s good enough for a refreshing splash and makes a pleasant outlook from the room (better than “not much”).

A modest pool, but it will keep you cool.

A small breakfast selection is included in the rate, either served in the cafe or in bed. The Aswana advertise themselves as a co-working space and the cafe would make a pleasant office for a day—there are power points—but reviews mention that the WiFi is slow (we didn’t test it).

Although rooms are rather small, The Aswana is not a bad flashpacker deal for Seminyak. If you’d prefer space over hip stye, the fan rooms at older-style Raja Gardens are similarly priced and you get a vast garden to run around in plus a good-sized pool.
