When we ventured upon the terrific The Green Room, we were a little disappointed to learn that it’s a surf camp—a bonus for surfers, but as it’s an all-inclusive deal with daily surfing makes it expensive for just a room.

However if you are planning a surfing holiday, hightail it to The Green Room, suitable for all levels to improve their skills. Tons of different packages are on offer—though oddly, it's all priced in euros (we suspect they convert at the last minute to rupiah to avoid breaking the law in Indonesia). Choose between a dorm, a spacious comfortable room all to yourself or a teepee by the pool. Deals include daily breakfast, professional surf guiding and theory, and daily transfers to the best waves of the season suitable for your mastery (even if that means travelling far or changing breaks during the day), as well as free pushbikes and the occasional barbecue. Airport transfers are included for a five-night stay or longer. Other deals can add in meals and services including tours on flat days to explore Bali. And after a long day surfing, you’ll need a relaxing and comfortable place to hang, and that’s just what The Green Room offers.

There's the surfing, or you could suffer and stay by the pool.

Rooms are housed in two double-storey long-house blocks, traditional lumbungs (rice barns), and the aforementioned teepees, punctuated with two stunning decked swimming pools and an open-air restaurant. Shady trees including mangos and coconuts burst with fruit (in season), and beanbags, lounges and cosy nooks make this the perfect tropical setting to unwind.

Comfortable air-con interiors follow a stylish beach-house aesthetic, mostly white with whitewashed and sun-bleached wood and pops of sea blue. Room offerings included suites with kitchenette and lounge suitable for up to four, and smaller double and twin rooms. All have comfortable and clean beds, TV, DVD player and safe, with stylish hot-water ensuite bathrooms.

Dorms in the wood and thatch lumbungs are more rustic traditional Indonesian style. The double-storey lumbungs provides two sturdy mosquito-netted wooden bunks beds on each air-con level, with the shared bathroom and open lounge below. We weren’t able to see the sleeping arrangements inside the teepee, although we’re informed there’s a proper bed. If you’re a solo traveller, but would prefer a standard room rather than a dorm, share rooms with the same gender can be arranged. Of course there’s storage for your surfboard too, and some for hire. The camp welcomes guests with an informative booklet about all things surf in Bali and encourages you to reduce plastic (otherwise you’ll be surfing in it)—you can buy a refillable water bottle and free filtered water dispensers are outside the rooms.

You’ll be surfing with a predominantly European crowd, except of course for the skilled Balinese guides. Rates are reduced by E1 for each day of stay, so the longer you stay, the better value it becomes, however the deal is only offered up to a 50 percent discount (no, you can’t eventually move in for free). If you surf and like the all-in holiday camp atmosphere, The Green Room is well worth at least a couple of days of your Bali stay.
