We love the unique style and the tranquil relaxing ambience of Blue Karma, a good choice if you’re in the market for a bit of luxury and personalised service without the crowds of a large resort.

In a narrow quiet lane behind busy Jalan Raya Seminyak, a gathering of carved wooden totem poles guard the round thatch-roofed entrance to Blue Karma, suggesting that this is not your run-of-the mill hotel. Welcoming staff select your key from a wall of brass hands gesturing in assorted mudras before you enter the compact but gorgeous manicured tropical grounds surrounded by secluded suites and villas.

Centring this appealing retreat, an organic-shaped stone-clad swimming pool sparkles amid a rainbow of decorative temple umbrellas and waving palm trees. The wooden decked pool offers a handful of leisurely sun lounges, or take up a comfy spherical rattan chair in the shaded open-air restaurant. Carved wooden Indonesian troll-like figures patrol the bridge over the pool, and a wooden horse enjoys as sunny spot on the grassy lawn.

Elaborate carved and thatch entryways open to double-storey bungalows housing cool contemporary air-con rooms. One-bedroom suites occupy the upper level with private balcony, and the lower level offers a private courtyard and plunge pool—the pool suite. Interconnecting doors enable them to be sold as a two-bedroom villa. Larger three- and four-bedroom villas are also on offer.

Immaculate spacious interiors do not disappoint with polished cement floors and walls, whitewashed wood, and a muted palette offering a serene ambience. Furnishings are plush with extra thick mattresses on the mosquito-netted beds and traditional carvings echoing those around the pool remind you that you’re not in Kansas anymore. Mod-cons include large flatscreen TVs, safe, minbar and tea-making facilities. We were impressed by the sight of a proper teapot and drinking water in glass bottles, only let down with Nescafe sachets (really!?).

Semi-open ensuite bathrooms add wood to the polished cement finish, with a beautiful rough-hewn slab of polished teak supporting carved boulder double basins. Again the reduced use of plastic here is notable. The upper-level balcony is edged by window boxes planted with colourful bougainvillea, offering privacy to guests below, but limiting the outlook (and light) and making these rooms feel a tad claustrophobic. A la carte breakfast is included and offers Lebanese and Japanese options as well as Western and Indonesian. All-day dining can be enjoyed in the on-site restaurant.

Blue Karma’s facilities also include a spa and small boutique. Blue Karma is minutes to shops and restaurants, and just over a kilometre to the beach, with a free shuttle available. An excellent pick if within your budget for something a bit different but still very Balinese.
